We’re delighted to be able to share a brand new completed interior design project with you this month. A newly renovated bungalow in the Rhiwbina area of Cardiff, which started out as an initial design consultation back in February 2025 and ended up as design and styling for multiple rooms, right down to the placement of artwork on the walls.

It’s with great appreciation, as always, to our client for allowing us to come back with photographer Aga Hosking to take photos of her finished home. Seeing our homeowner living in her new space, full of reflections of her personality and with a home that suits her current chapter in life, is the best feeling in the world. We’re happy to share with you the Glanrhyd project…

The Project Details

A bungalow in Rhiwbina, Cardiff. Our client wanted to create a home that felt calm, light and nurturing to support her next chapter. A place for her to enjoy both on a daily basis and on special occasions with family and friends. Our role was to help shape a home that offered comfort, healing and a renewed sense of belonging.

At the time of our initial consultation, a full renovation was due to start imminently, including the build of a dormer and opening up the ground floor into an open plan format.

Our client had seen our interior design work on the Heol Wen project and got in touch to discuss how we could help her develop the interiors of the house, making it feel more like home.

The Brief

We were initially hired for a design consultation to offer advice on the kitchen layout and finishes. We helped clarify our client’s interior style which would facilitate a good flow throughout the house.

As the project progressed, our client was keen to extend our remit to include the full interior design for the ground floor space, three bathrooms and overall styling. She quickly saw the benefits of using us to pull a cohesive design together.

Our sourcing scope covered furniture including the sofa, dining table and chairs, armchairs, rugs, sideboard and the all important lighting. We also provided 3D renders for the bathroom to help our client visualise the space. This also enabled intentional, considered choices by showing how the design for each room would feel connected and flow well with the right pieces and finishes. This saved our client a lot of browsing time and poorly-spent money. One of the many benefits of working with an interior designer!

We were really happy that our client valued our initial guidance so much that she wanted to bring us further into the project. A happy client means everything to us. In May 2026 we helped with the placement of her extensive artwork collection in her newly renovated spaces, ahead of shooting with Aga Hosking to capture these beautiful images.

The Interior Design Approach

General Design Direction

Our client initially came to us with a broad range of design inspiration. Sharing inspirational images is always a great place to start. It allows us to look for patterns in your preferences and gives us an insight into design direction.

We were able to guide the style direction towards a clean, modern and minimal style. Mid-century notes in the tile selection and colour in the open plan living space and cloakroom provided plenty of character. This was punctuated by an artwork collection, curated over years and collected with love. Textures and material choices were key, as they always are. We were also careful to take influences from her family home but introducing fresh ideas for a cohesive look and a comfortable home.

Our style here at Hygge & Cwtch involves using colour in a very intentional and considered way. We understand the power of colour on our wellbeing and how it can be used strategically to zone and highlight the key areas or design features. Our aim is always to use colour to full effect without overpowering a home, and that’s exactly what we did here.

The Kitchen and Utility

Our role in this part of the house involved suggesting amendments to the original layout, improving the kitchen and utility design and flow. We worked really closely with the client on this. It was important that we considered all the elements within the kitchen and utility room, understanding how she lives and moves through the space so that she would have everything she needed. We also guided her on style, finishes and the flooring to achieve the cohesive feel we were after.

The Snug and Sitting Areas

With a requirement for plenty of seating, we made the recommendation to separate the living space into two distinct areas. The snug is a small, cosy space. Centred around a wood burning stove with natural light pouring in from the bifold doors. Textured mid-century inspired tiles draw the eye and create a feature corner behind the fireplace. The fluted detailing on the sideboard and coffee table contrast beautifully with the simplicity of the light beige tiles. It’s these kinds of details that really elevate a space.

A second seating area, just next to the snug, is sectioned off by the positioning of the sofa and a bold, inspiring shade of green on the walls and doors, helping to zone the sitting area. Paired with orange accents, a restrained use of pattern, and plenty of texture, this space it’s own identity. One which feels fresh and inviting. The perfect spot to sit with a cuppa or to sit and chat with a friend. The colour palette also provides the perfect backdrop for our client’s stunning art collection.

Between the two living spaces and the dining area there is an abundance of seating options. This was key to facilitating our client’s daily life and enabling social connection when the house is full of guests.

The Dining Area

We mixed textures, finishes and injecting colour whilst keeping a neutral, simple backdrop. Subtle stripes in the rug and accessories add a playful, modern edge. The stripes pair well with the fluted details of the ceiling light and sideboard. We continued the mid-century nod from the fireplace through to the dining space via the curved velvet chairs and the stunning glass and metal sideboard. A Tom Raffield lamp is our go-to for a statement piece of lighting. This corner was crying out for a talking point which this natural oak floor lamp certainly delivered!

The Bathroom Design

We had a cloakroom, ensuite and first floor bathroom to tackle. So much design opportunity in these three small spaces! Bathrooms are challenging purely due to the practical considerations and the sheer amount of micro decisions that need to be made. We’re really happy with how all three turned out, and more importantly, so is our client!

The cloakroom is a real ‘wow’ moment. This is the bathroom used most by guests so we wanted it to have impact. To be a space our client was proud of. We used terrazzo floor tiles and terrazzo topped vanity for a timeless yet contemporary look. And added a shot of bold colour for impact in true Hygge & Cwtch style. For us, the large vanity is the real show-stopper of the room!

The ensuite and dormer bathroom are both compact spaces, which provided our biggest challenges in those rooms. We suggested layout changes to improve the design and create a spacious feel.

The combination of considered use of space, the texture in the tiles, the softness brought through the natural wood furniture and details, and quality hardware and ambient lighting, deliver on a series of bathrooms which feel like a truly integrated, intentional part of the home.
